Depends on supply and demand. You'll always get a good price well in advance, but if sales have been slow and there's plenty of last minute vacancies you'll get a real good deal and can even bargain the price down.
On the other hand, if demand has been high and there's few vacancies it's going to hit you in the pocket. It's your gamble, and it is a gamble.

It depends where's you're staying. When I go to Florida, I go to Walt Disney World and stay at the Polynesian Resort. With WDW, it's best to book as far in advance as possible. I booked my trip for 11 days (Aug. 1st through the 11th) and it was over $9,000. At the beginning of the month, I checked the rates again, and the package I had booked had gone up to almost $11,000! So, I guess it depends where you're staying. Other hotels may have last-minute deals. I'm glad I booked my trip earlier... I mean, $9,000 is a lot anyway, but it's crazy how much the price went up.

Last minute deals may be very cheap, but then, you may not get a place on the flight too.
I generally book early when I intend to travel during the peak season; school vacations and Christmas/Easter breaks, but last minute, if I don't really mind where I'm going for a week, and am just looking for cheap deals to several places.

You can get some really good deals on last minute breaks - but you have to be flexible with travel arrangements. I've been on holidays where I've paid a couple of hundred quid for a break that others have paid twice as much for! Find a friendly travel agent and let them do the hard work for you!

You get better deals by booking last minute, have a look at www.late-deal.co.uk, there are some pretty amazing prices on there, and you can always get an extra discount if you phone them and barter. Have fun !!

It you are wanting to go to the Orlando area, it is better to book in advance. For two reasons, generally promotions are put out a few months before the dates you can travel in. But, mostly because it can be hard to find availability if you wait to long.

if you book at the last minute you probably won't get much of a deal, but booking a year in advance might bring on surcharges.

I"m going to Orlando on the 26th and I book my tickets through Priceline on the 16th. Cheap airfare (DFW to MCO-$308), cheap hotel (Hilton Orlando for $49 a night), cheap midsize car (Avis-$18 a day). All by naming your own price on Priceline. I've got four people going with park tickets for less than $2300. Discount park tickets can be found through Ebay but you have to purchase the "insider information". Tickets were about $75 cheaper (each) by doing it.

you do get some good deals last minute, but you have to be more flexible with your requests... flight times, hotels and dates should be a little more vague to ensure getting the best last minute deal

if you book more in advance you get better deals because as space becomes more and more scarce, they charge more. Its like supply and demand.
