Reduce: Don't be such a consumer. Don't buy products with unnecessary packaging.

Reuse: When you do buy something, don't buy disposables unless it's absolutely necessay. Buy things that you can use over and over again, such as cloth diapers, washable plates, cups and glasses. Find different/creative ways to use containers instead of throwing them away.

Recycle: If it can't be reused, recycle it. Most counties have recycling centers where you can take your recyclables.

The mantra of "reduce, reuse and recycle" will take on a new level of meaning for students who participate in Argonne National Laboratory's 11th annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest.

The contest challenges high school student teams to build a complicated machine that takes at least 20 steps to cut or shred into strips five sheets of 8 ½ by 11, 20-lb. paper individually with a shredder and place the shredded paper in a recycle bin. The machines will be put to the test in the contest.

reuse - means to reuse products that you already have and are in working condition. So if you have a working appliance, continue to use it rather than buying a new one. Example: Printers - it may be cheaper to buy a new printer rather than buy an ink cardtridge for it, but by reusing the old printer you save resources.

Reduce - reduce the waste you create, unnecessary napkin usage and other plastic waste is disastrous to the environment.

Recycle - reuse old materials to create new materials. Instead of trashing some materials, recycle them to create something new. Example: You can write on the back of some papers to save on paper!
