Only if the player obtained his second yellow in the last game of the group stages and then he would miss the first game of the knockout round. Otherwise one card is wiped out and the player starts from scratch. This caused some confusion in our house as the old system meant that any cards gained in the group stage were wiped at the next round.

Yellow Cards do carry into the next round, but only if the player has received two. All players that have received two yellow cards will miss the next game, but players with just one yellow card have that yellow card taken away. So the reason why managers are resting players on yellow cards is because if they get another they will miss the next match.

If you received two yellow cards in the first round, then you will miss the second round match (if your team qualifies), likewise a red card received in the last match of the first round will lead you to missing the second round match.
