I can't give you specific information on the interactions of fluvoxamine and valerian root. If you don't get other advice from people in the medical field who have a background in these specific drugs I would recommend that you check with your doctor before starting ANY new medication, herbal or otherwise.

But I did see your post and I wanted to give you a suggestion of something else to try besides valerian root. If you have problems with anxiety, there is a supplement out there that I have found to be absolutely one of the best things. I had problems with anxiety, too, and nothing (from ativan, clorazepam aka klonopin, to xanax, etc) helped. Also, I did not want to be "drugged up" all the time, and was very wary of the physical and psychological dependencies that can occur with these drugs.

A doctor recommended that I try taking the supplement GABA, and I have not had problems with anxiety since then. I have found that it makes me feel calmer and more in control without feeling stupid, sleepy, or drugged. I would strongly, strongly recommend that you give it a try. i have also tried valerian root and did not find it particularly beneficial, but the GABA has truly worked wonders. I have since heard from other friends who have had similar problems, and some of their doctors have also recommended they try GABA.

If you are reluctant to give GABA a try for whatever reason, I would also like to suggest that you give kava kava a try. I did also use kava kava, but found that ultimately GABA was the best for me.

You can find it at your local health food store, like a GNC, or you can also find it online at vitaminshoppe.com. It is not very expensive and is only about $11 per bottle of 90 tablets, which will last you through 3 months.

Best of luck to you!

Fluvoxamine is a medicine used in the treatment of depression and OCD's (obsessive/compulsive disorders). I found the following info regarding drug interactions with valerian:

"Before taking valerian, talk your doctor if you are taking muscle relaxants, other sleep or anxiety medicines, pain medicines, seizure medicines, antidepressants, or other medicines that cause drowsiness. These drugs may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking valerian.

"Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with valerian or affect your condition. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or health care professional before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines or other herbal/health supplements."

I'd say definitely talk to your doctor before trying this combo! You could have some seriously adverse reactions. Not worth the experimentation.

When in doubt, talk to your doc!

My mother and I both took it Valium which is make from Valerian root. My mother also took Valerian root from the health food store.
We found it addictive. and had to continually take more to get the same effect. It began to slow my urination down, to where it eventually barely trickled out. I was in my early 30s. The problem got better when I stopped the Valium but not totally relieved over the years. My mother had the same problems. When she stopped taking it she had withdrawal symptoms as though she was stopping a narcotic for a couple of weeks. She was 65 years of age at the time. She continued to have the problem with the urination for the rest of her 15 years of life , only less.

Don't bother asking your Dr. he will tell you not to take it. He is right. Valerian root doesn't work very well any way. Get something from your doctor. There are many antidep. out there that have an anti-anxiety agent in them.

Take calcium instead. Calcium will cause your synaptic nervous system to stop firing so rapidly and will calm you down.

Google it to be sure...
