Yes, same thing. Just depends on what part of the country your from. some call them lightning Bugs while others call them Fireflies. My kids call them "loads of fun" when they squish them and they glow lol

As a baby I referred to as them lightening insects yet now I call them fireplace flies. weird and wonderful, the a lot less actual pronounceable version of the call for them is what I used in formative years and the more effective actual suggested one i exploit now. weird and wonderful.

Yes, they are. I used to catch them in mayonnaise jars when I was a child in the Carolinas. Then I let them go so they wouldn't die. It was really lovely on a summer's evening to see the backyard lit up by those tiny little flashes. I haven't seen any here in France.

we don't have them in AZ- in IL, they were the same thing.
