Visit the Royal Armouries in Leeds its free entrance but you have to pay parking.
Get your local paper they usually do day trips around the country
Get in touch with you local council, they usually have plenty of activities during the summer hols.
Get your kid a hobby - drawing, painting, gardening, helping mummy with housework!
Take a walk in a park & feed the ducks.

Build a play house out of the clothes maiden and sheets, get a load of boxes from the local supermarket and make trains and space ships out of them, he'll have hours of fun for free.
Got some cash then I hear the Science and Technology Museum is really good in Manchester, even for the youngsters. Try the sea life centre in Chester, gullivers world in Warrington, the local swimming baths, the library. Visit every relative you know, go on the internet and find ones you don't know!

Theres loads to do in the hols, some of it can be pricy but it doesnt have to be. Im in Derby and i would suggest swimming at the pools with the best slides, rollerskating, the ski centre does some excellent stuff for kids in the hols so does the local sports centres. For things that dont cost so much i would do museums, local libraries, local farms to see and feed the animals and just getting out to the park for a picnic occasionally, try going to different parks, dont always go to the same one. Our local sports centre does a whole range of activities from trampolining to short tennis. My daughter is never bored in the hols, check out your local centres and see what they have to offer
hope this helps!

Often, if you refer to the papers (in your case, The Manchester Evening News) they will have adverts for childrens groups that run through the holidays, where, for a nominal fee, your youngster can enjoy all manner of activities.

Otherwise, investing in a paddling pool and lots of paper and crayons is advisable, and taking them swimming, or for a bike ride always seems to go down well!!

Get them started on adventure sports and self defence before they develop fear.

ie start maritals arts to prevent bullying, swimming and diving to build up confidence for water sports like surfing.

And get them in the habit.

As well as regular self defence (Krav Maga in the UK kravmaga.co.uk) is very good or ninjitsu (as in Ninja) (teaches climbing and chemistry and stealth as well.

Skiing (seen younger kids on skis) and snowboarding

Skateboarding etc

All aimed around getting the basics and confidence in with the hope it continues
