mostly folk or something shared through a popular medium. what i mean by folk: how many people worldwide might be familiar with "Happy Birthday to You"?... popular medium? anything through American pop culture: '80s Michael Jackson ("Beat It")or Beatles or Elvis Presley...old jingles (Coke:"I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing")...or anthems (Star Wars' Imperial March, graduation march, or wedding march) or sadly enough: whatever might be popular on MT-V's TRL...or David Hasselhoff
I guess what I'm asking of you is: what is your definition of "most popular": most widely recognized no matter what time frame? or what is currently popular? in my generation, we can hear in our heads the composition of music behind Darth Vader in the original "Star Wars" trilogy...or it can be as simple as singing the "La-la-La's" from the Smurfs opening sequence. those slightly younger than myself might identify more with whatever music accompanies the currently most popular video game or even the opening guitar riff of the "Beavis and Butthead" and/or "Jackass" series...

Hard to say. Rock maybe but Rock seems to be yesterday as today people are turning To R n B. Even though it is a music I do not like and I find it weak, my fave music is Rap/Hip Hop (not mainstream as this gets very R n B) but underground stuff is good espically artists starting up right now I find their beats are the hardest

universal would be simply that
MUSIC.....all of them fall into this simplified catagory . its all music.
on a wing though I would have to go with accapella "meaning using ones voice only w/no instruments". but music of love I bet is world wide and still a popular era in all cultures.
