After taking advice from answers on my old farmhouse table that I sanded, I still have patches of white and black on thesurface of the wood. It does not look nice but I cannot spend anymore time sanding. Are these white patches normal and will they go once I put on my danish oil. I followed the advice given.i.e. fine sand paper then wire wool, then white spirit, malt vinegar. but I am now at a loss perhaps I am been too fussy. My husband thinks so. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

Depends on where the stains come from.

You can expect lighter patches to darken immediately and get darker over a longer period of time. Weeks even years depending on how much sun the patch gets. Expect the light patches to blend in perfectly.

Dark patches that stay after the way you treated the wood are there to stay.

It is the nature of wood, you can either love it or be miserable about it when you look at it.

I think the white patches are just the raw wood if they are rough you need to sand with finer finish sand paper. The black marks may be burns, did you use a belt or power sander. If yes you may have burnt the wood by leaving it in one place to long. You need to sand some more.

Start with rough sand paper then work to med then to fine then to finish. It takes time and do the last part by hand with a sanding block.

You need to take the layer with the black spots off. It needs to feel really smooth when done.

You should have started with a coarse sandpaper to really dig deep. Was it stained or painted before? Paint isn't so bad, but stain is a pain to remove... you'll have to keep sanding for awhile, and keep applying turpentine.
