Well the best war game i have played is CALL OF DUTY... Its based upon The 2 World Wars that have taken place before in the world... the game has excellent graphics and i finished the game without cheats... as the game is EASY... and CALL OF DUTY 2 is one of the top 10 games of the year 2005

Red Alert is a classic war game and great fun...not too hard to pick up!
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series is similar...it's war based, but as a leader of a tactical team. It is HARD...very strategic, very challenging...you really have to plan a strike carefully and accurately...step by step...even your choice of weapon and teammates and who'll walk where...
Unlike a lot of games you can't just go in blazing - I mean, you can, but you won't get far...but it is fun and really makes you think :-)
Command and Conquer Generals is good too - similar to Red Alert but quite different and for a change, not just Soviet vs US - there is a modelled Middle Eastern terror organisation to fight for/against too.

Hearts of Iron 2, It's a nice strategy game you can be any country in WW 2.

Battlefield 2 and its expansion special forces and get the booster packs this game will have you hooked if you have a girlfriend dump her now cause youll be into this game to much for her anyway lolol

any of the command and conquer games and lucky you they have put them all together in one box spanning ten years of gaming fun oh by the way all but one are real time strategy and one is a first person shooter
