The name "Godzilla" is a combination of two Japanese words: kujira (鯨, くじら) 'whale' and gorira (ゴリラ) 'gorilla'. The word alludes to the size, power and also aquatic origin of Godzilla.
And I know the last few answers are a bit insulting...
but I'd also like to know why you'd think "Godzilla" is Chinese, because it doesn't even sound anything remotely like Chinese.

I'm sure the asker can already see that it is Japanese. Just because he did not know it was Japanese doesn't mean he's racist.To answer your question,Godzilla means big lizard.

Just because someone doesn't know what they are talking about doesn't mean they're racist. Some people are too uptight and just looking for a reason to jump on someone else. I'm sure you know everything about every culture, or at least enough to never offend anyone. HEAVEN FORDBID I offend someone of another race! Especially when I can't help my own ignorance. People who jump to accuse someone else so quickly are even worse because they are intentionally shitting on someone's head.

The original monster was called Gojira. When the American version came out the American distributors changed the spelling.
