Jesus was sinless. In the Old Testament and the New sacrifices were made for the sins people committed. An animal had to be slaughtered in order that the sinner realised the dreadfulness of sinning against God. That life blood was shed because of their sin. Likewise, Jesus willingly went to his death that sin might be defeated for believers who were obedient to God's ways. Jesus knew the anguish and agony he would have to go through, as he told his disciples, but they did not understand until the crucifixion actually happened. If we truly believe in God and want to do His will we will be baptized into that death and come up to newness of life. By this we acknowledge that we turn to God and leave our old ways of life. Our sins are blotted out. Just as Jesus was raised to eternal life so, if we truly try to be obedient to his Father, we will be raised when Jesus returns. All this is by the grace of God. Comment: we frequently hear that Jesus died instead of us. We die. Our breath (pneuma) goes but by having total faith we have the prospect of resurrection.
