So I met a guy for coffee once because he seemed nice, but when I actually sat down and had a conversation with him he seemed... off... I don't know how to explain it.
But he mentioned something about being in a gang (who knew there were gangs in Minnesota?) and knowing some guy that had gotten shot and had killed the guy that shot him... yeah, I made up a lame excuse and bolted.
After that I stopped returning his calls, and I blocked him on AIM and I didn't hear from him for about a month. But about a week ago he called me from a private number(I could tell it was his voice)and told me that he'll be watching me when I go to sleep. Two days later he called again to say he was dreaming of stabbing me. The about 20 minutes ago he called again to say that he was outside of my house with a knife. This time I told him that I knew it was him and that if he called again I was calling the police.
But ok, I'm scared, what if he did somehow track me down? What else should I do?

He will be a permanent enemy of you, if by mistake even you call the police. He may just be threatening you and may not be having any idea of harming you, but if you take the help of police in your personal case, his idea may likely to take shape of harming you. If you really need help of the police, you may have to plan wisely, so that he may not get any suspicion on you and get arrested. Meet the Head of the Police office of your town and tell him the whole story and your plan to check him while conversating with you.
First of all you get another phone number in addition to the existing one. Tell all your friends and family members to call you only on that number by telling them that the number has been changed.
With the help of the Police, ask the phone company to tap the conversation of the old number if he calls on you. Now onwards, instead of showing yourself as scared of him, just make him busy in the conversation and during the conversation cleverly try to get details of all the crimes he had done.
In the meantime the phone company gets the police informed when the converstion is on. The police may have to be prompt in action to nab him. But tell the police people that your name should not come to the fore and if they want the evicence, only conversation tape should be made as an evidence of his threatening and other incidents.

Yes call 911, there are many ways that he could have tracked you down and the police may already know of him or even looking for him.

Ask advice from the police.
Get a phone that can recognize numbers and record all calls. You will need those when you go to court.

YOU SHOULD CALL THE POLICE, AND THEY ARE GOING TO TELL YOU THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING UNTIL THIS GUY HURT YOU IN SOME WAY,BUT THEY WILL HAVE A REPORT THAT YOU FILLED TELLING THEM ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. THEN GO GET A RESTAINING ORDER AGAINST HIM, AND KEEP REPORTING TO THE POLICE IF HE INSISTS ON PURSUING YOU . PLEASE MAKE SURE 100% THAT THIS IS THE GUY. you need to notify the police... if it continues see about a protective order-- not a restraining order .. .and if he calls and says hes outside hit 911
