without a doubt the answer would have to be Bob Dylan. He has written more songs than anyone, and his work has been performed by more people than anyone! I wanted to include a list of most of his songs so far but the list was hundreds long and would be way too long. Pretty good for a guy who can't sing that well!. And he is oft credited for starting the electric revolution. (as in electric guitar!)

The two greatest lyricist and musicians are Paul McCartney and John Lennon, followed closely by Paul Simon. How you can put Shania Twain in the same category as these two is beyond me - in our house she's known as 'Shania f***ing Twain'.

The greatest music composers (in my opinion, talking about prog rock) are the early members of King Crimson (1968-1974), whose compositions between those years were clearly the best from the band.

I give the nod for lyric writer and music composer to Burt Bacharach and Hal David. They wrote hit songs for Dionne Warwick,Dusty Springfield and others. Their songs are among the best ever.
