Well for me it's the beat and the lyrics. That is what will grab my attention. Now I don't listen to rap with alot of vulgar language in it or that is degrading in any way.
Most people I know like rap because they can really relate to it and the lyrics behind the story. Hope that clarifies any questions.

Because for some reason america loves the idea of either being a player, drug dealer, or just rich and being about to say something completly stupid and get away with it. and its They see me rollin, They hatin, Patrolin and tryin to catch me riding dirty (riding dirty is the act of driving a car either while you have a warrent for your arrest, or something on or in your car is illegal....not a good thing) see what im talking about.
Also some rap deals with real life issues that most people are afraid to really talk about go listen to Lyfe's new song called S.E.X and no its not freaky if you have a daughter 12-16 or even 18 and they havnt heard it they need to

Rap/hiphop/blipblop/etc.... are popular because they rip off from other musician's #1 hits or what have you and simply add some extra percussive beats to it. Plus, youth today (who drive this kind of "music") don't know any better because it has more to do with a "popularity contest" amongst themselves and about what is "cool" by others.....in order to fit in. Sometimes even white kids walking with limps or with retarded hand gestures and bad grammar with unintelligent word-speak. Just as disco was in the 70s, heavy metal rock was in the 70s and 80s, grunge rock in the mid to late 90s.....it's all fad based. But within some of these styles there was actually real melodies and originality....unlike most of today's crap music....same goes with movies....look, another Superman movie is out again....same old throw-ups in a new looking package....and people lick it up clean because someone is selling the image or the products and making money off the weak-minded, inexperienced, and insecure of the world.

Interesting enough all the rap concerts that have been bust. I heard of one top act lineup that attracted a whopping 5 people and half of them didn't know there was a concert because it took place in a public park.
I think rap is also over hyped and from sales, it sort of sucks to be them. If they wanted to make money, they would need to get into making country music.

Hooks... aka catchyness...
People have different degrees of catchyness. Most rap songs have the greatest appeal to basic catchy levels. Although rap songs are also notoriously known for coming up with unbelievable hooks that are just mind boggling to the ears at times.

Becayse they're different from others..The lyrics for example..The singer sings his/her feelings in a rude way..Sometimes everyone wants it..'Saying their feelings in a rude way'..
