We work hard so that when we aren't working we are enjoying life. This is why it's so important to have a job you enjoy. Then work isn't really work and you can enjoy life all the time. In our material society posessions tend to make us happy (this is another question to be asked later). If you don't have the things you want or the things you NEED then life can be miserable.
Death is a whole other issue. A quote from a semi-famous comedian comes to mind.
"I like to drink red wine. This girl said, 'doesn't red wine give you a headache?' Yeah, eventually. But the first and middle parts are amazing. I'm not gonna stop doing something because of what happens at the end. 'Mitch, do you want an apple?' No, eventually it'll be a core." - Mitch Hedberg
Enjoy the apple.

Quite frankly, doing nothing is boring. We work in hopes of something better, in hopes of a brighter future.
Would you rather die now or later? If you die now, all you've done is what you've already done. You don't need to toil on, you don't need to keep suffering in life. Yet, you could have done more- had more fun, felt more accomplished, made one more person smile.
Life is wonderful if you make it wonderful. Ever lain outside and watched a thunderstorm start? It starts with deep rumbles and the swaying of the trees and grass and the clouds moving ever swifter and somehow you can feel small and trapped but the whole universe seems laid bare to you.
We do not live to die. We live to live- to experience sorrow... and love. To have known both, to have given someone happiness.

It is what we do with out lived that makes us who we are. Sitting around the house getting stoned would not be considered a productive life, unless you were the one sitting there. Yet looking back in history, some of the greatest people wouldn't even think of being remembered for some of the things they have done.

We are not working hard to die...we are working hard to live (thinking that we would live forever)
We are born...so if life is meaningless we have to die immediately...and that is why the born child have no emotions and memories recorded in them...otherwise it will die immediately...so what we are doing is making the meaningless life into beautiful one...by our thoughts...deeds...and ideas. If we go to a hardware shop...there are lot of things...nuts..screws...very tiny to big things...are they necessary for our living directly...without that we can live....what we need is food...shelter...and cloth..like ancient men...if they would have thought these things are enough..then there is no modern world at all...they wantd to make life beautiful...although they knew they were going to live for a short time...
A man was working hard in hot sun...a saint who had gone by that way asked the man,'Why are you working so hard?' The man replied 'Because i have to eat to keep my body fit' Then the saint asked him'Why you have to keep your body fit?' The man replied 'Then only i can work hard tomorrow'...so innocent and beautiful...

We live for the "Hereafter Life". We are responsible for our bad and good deeds.
5. They say: "Our hearts are under veils, (concealed) from that to which thou dost invite us, and in our ears in a deafness, and between us and thee is a screen: so do thou (what thou wilt); for us, we shall do (what we will!)"
6. Say thou: "I am but a man like you: it is revealed to me by inspiration, that your God is One God. so take the straight path unto Him, and ask for His Forgiveness." And woe to those who join gods with Allah
7. Those who pay Zakat, and who even deny the Hereafter.
8. For those who believe and work deeds of righteousness is a reward that will never fail.
Quran-41. Ha Mim
29. Say: "Whether ye hide what is in your hearts or reveal it, Allah knows it all: He knows what is in the heavens, and what is on earth. And Allah has power over all things.
30. "On the Day when every soul will be confronted with all the good it has done, and all the evil it has done, it will wish there were a great distance between it and its evil. But Allah cautions you (to fear) Him. And Allah is full of kindness to those that serve Him."
Quran-3.The Family of Imran
"You ask the embryo why he, or she, stays cooped up
in the dark with eyes closed.
Listen to the answer.
There is no "other world."
I only know what I've experienced.
You must be hallucinating."
Mevlana Rumi

We don't live to die. We die because we have lived. There is a limited unknown amount of time between birth and death and it would be a good idea to use that unknown amount of time well.

HEY LOOK!!!!! There goes the point!
Its the journey not the result of this small step of it which matters. And death is not the "END", its merely a different path along the journey.
"Working so hard" might very well be a simple matter of perception.
