I don't know precisely why but its just letting you know it's working pretty much. Some make the actual noise which is loud and often times annoying but on newer computers I've found that it actually makes the noise through the computer (you can hear it through the speakers). I personally like being able to hear it simply because I can tell by the noise it makes how it's going to dial up...be it 32.6kbps or 42.5kbps and I know its working. Mine never actually dials up at 56k I don't know why that is but it sure would help to find out cuz I'd like to know why its not running at its max. capacity like it should. Oh well another day I suppose.

hi dear!
u may have 2 reasons 4 this
1} whenever u try to connect ur computer to internet then ur modem which is connected to system makes a call to the spacified no. i.e. to server which is located at telephone exchange or at ur isp's office this process makes ur modem to make a sound. this is not wrong or any fault it is a general process to tell u ur modem is dialling a no. so u need not worry abt it & can continue surfing the net without being worried abt it.

2} it may b becos any one is trying to call u so ur modem is making noice.

bye & take care

that noise, is caused by the speaker on the modem, and the noise that u hear is the connection noise a series of different pitched noises.. and the modem, modulates and demodulates this signal.

It's really, really old. Give it some prunes; that should quiet it down, at least until 'Murder She Wrote' is on...
