It's going down the toilet that's for sure. Endless greed by record companies have killed off originality and controlled what the people want to hear. It's almost like an assembly cookie-cutter factory....to be a successful artists one must either look a certain way, behave slutty or show cleavage with plenty of pelvic thrustings while singing about "getting it on" with anything that comes in close proximity with the listener. It's all about image nowadays and nothing about actual real and creative music writing.

Listen to Enya, Pink Floyd, Rush, James Last (great remakes!! Even better than rap :) ), ABBA, AC/DC, Joe Satriani (early stuff), Steve Vai, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Billy Joel, Van Halen, Led Zep, Vangelis and a few others...too many to mention. These artists knew/know how to put together great melodies and sounds. Today's music is filled mostly with crap unfortunately.....it's a shame that a lot of the younger listeners aren't introduced to much of these artist's songs. Rap/hiphop crap is the "Lord Of The Flies" mentality of much of today's tribe-like clique life in younger folk. Time to educate the ears and widen the palette. :) The music industry once made their bread and butter off of these artists and shunned most of the talentless ones....now it's the other way around. You don't see too many good ugly singers or musicians....everyone has to be "beautiful" or full bodied without much care of the voice or instrument playing abilities. Rollingstone magazine dumped on Steve Vai for years because he is unbelievably good...Steve Vai!!!! Meanwhile, punk-@ssed teen bands come through because their music contains a lot of angst and anger which is what can sell products to the listeners as the record industry feels that the music can relate better with younger folks. It's no longer about music, it's all about profit. And then they wonder why people aren't buying music anymore or not going to the movies as much. Too much vomit out there.

Good day.

this is a great question I think there are many contributing factors pointing towards no real great defining bands. First there has been such a division in music it seems every new band is coming up with a new style of rock when it's the same as the next band but a little different. The most notable movement is music at least rock music is this 80's wannabe new wave movement which I hate personally and don't really think the music is that great or memorable. I can still remember the first time I head dazed and confused, stairway to heaven and Hey Jude but nothing of today which brings another point the music today just isn't that good anymore there is no more great innovations just tweaking previous ones. oh I could go on forever but when it comes down to it the bands I hope that will define this decade will be coldplay, audioslave (which is rage against the machine meets soundgarden literally, both great bands) and that's about all that's coming to mind right now

Good music of today? Coldplay, Incubus in terms of creativity and intelligent lyrics. I am sure there are a few others. But, music of today for the most part doesn't seem like music at all. Not original, not too many true musicians, and I wish rappers and hip hop artists could be catapulted out to space into never ending orbit around a distant planet.

Popular music is dead right now. If you look at the historical progression, music has deteriorated since the 60's. Imagine, sophisticated music from the 30's and 40's, from Gershwin to Porter, Kern and Rodgers were the popular music of the day. What you have now is pure trash. The only composer writing now who is in their league is Randy Newman, a true genius, and he's too good to be popular. Other pro musicians recognize this, and that's why they line up to be in his projects.

The better music is still alternative music. Bands like BB Chung King and the Buddha Heads, Devics, Actionslacks, The Faint and Boss Hog are better than any pop band. I think some pop bands will be named, but they will really such compared to the underground bands.
