i donont want to connect them over serial or any other cables. also i have no need for internet or printer sharing etc.

i tried connecting them throught the cable through the ways posted here but i always get the message network cable is unplugged although i have beenusing the same cable for connecting my adsl modem

You can do it on Windows 98 also.
For this to work you need to create a workgroup.
Make sure the IP address you give belongs to the same subnet.I have done it...it works.Cable must be cross-over cable. For cable structure, pin 1 and 2 of each RJ-45 should connect to pin 3 and 6.

Just connect the PC and laptop with the crossover cable and then assign the IP address to both system of same network. After that try to ping one system from other to check connecticity. Before that make sure u have turn off or have made changes in the windows firewall and other firewall running on system

U must need LAN card in both PC. Pls check u already have it or not. Just make a cross-over cable and share files.

Like most said use a cross cabe, way to identify the cross cable...look at both ends...the colors of the cables arrangement should be different.
