What does an abortion involve? What do they do to you?

It depends, if it is a medical or surgical abortion. Before either procedure a woman will have to go and get an ultrasound and physical exam. A medical abortion involves taking some drugs and allowing a miscariage. This happens at home over a few hours or days. Then the woman must go back to the clinic for another ultrasound to make sure that all the contents of the pregnancy were expelled.

A surgical abortion is done in a hospital operating room or clinic. The woman may be sedated or put under general anethesia. Then the cervix is dialated and the contents of the uterus are removed.

Does it hurt??

I think that really depends on the pain threshold. Although, a medical abortion is more painful as it is longer and drawn out. I had a surgical abortion at 16 weeks pregnant and it was less painful than my monthly period. I was asleep during the actual procedure and woke up with cramps. The cramps lasted a day or two and there was no extra bleeding.

How long to wait before sex?

Typically 2 weeks. After the abortion is complete it will take some time for the cervix to close again. Nothing should be inserted before it is closed because of risk of infection (penis and tampons alike!) . 2 weeks after the procedure a women has to go back to the clinic to have a post abortion follow up exam.

Good question, until you asked how long to wait until you could have sex again. Abortion is NOT a form of birth control. And that is where my anger lies! Abortion, for what ever reason, is now a right for those that choose to do so.

Be certain of why you make this choice.

Abortion is to end a life! Research aboration. It is done by vaccuming your uterus! By tearing the baby to pieces to get it out of you, and other means of ending the life. While YOU may sedated? Get some comfort in that.

Does it hurt? It hurts the baby you conceived when you had sex! It hurts the future of the person that child may have become. It hurts the people, family and freinds that expect you to live up to the consequences of sex.

While suctioning out that unwanted child maybe it takes a piece of your uteran wall. Maybe it sucks a peice of flesh from YOU that you may want or need if you ever decide to give birth at a more opportune time. Maybe it sucks the life out of YOU.

Is it painful?

For those with emotions it is! For those that have been raped it is. For those that are products of incest it still is.

But take somebody with you that you think you don't intend to keep as a friend and won't judge you for what you just did. You won't be able to drive home or to your boyfriends house.

And you may want to wait a few weeks before you have un-protected sex again. And you may have some discomfort during sex with whoever.

But what the hay! Just get yourself another abortion! Have sex as often as you like and accept no consequences of the LIFE you have created.

First you go to the abortion clinic, then they assess your mental status to make sure you know what you're doing and if you do or will need counselling.

Then you get changed into one of those backless robes and lie down on a table. They usually give you a choice of anaesthetic (the one that knocks you out is best so that you're asleep for the procedure).

Once you're anaesthetised they begin the procedure which involves spreaders and a vacuum like instrument that sucks the foetal sack and the uterine lining out. It doesn't hurt, but you may feel discomfort or some tummy pain later on but it only lasts a couple of hours.

You should wait two weeks before sex again so that the cervix has time to close properly. This will prevent further infections. Also refrain from using a tampon for the next two cycles.

Well i suggest she goes and see one if possible to understand what she is getting into because even as a doctor to me it is a terrible thing but due to some circumstances it has to be done but to me if some girl forgot to tell her Bf to wear a condom and just because they were too busy to worry about protection at the time and now want to have an abortion i would say i do not think she should go through with it .It will be a great regret when she will eventually have kids. But an abortion involves pain and discomfornt on a physical as well as emotional level.i can say you will not be the same anymore how hard you try.For me i can say when i was in med schhol and they showed us things that patients cannot handle which personally i think everybody should see then abortion will not be taken so trivially. They showed us an ultrasound where an adequately formed fetus is being scrapped as part of an abortion and you could see why it is called murder because once the scrapping started you can see this fetus fighting as if it knew was going to die and dying in the process.

An abortion is one of the safest medical procedures performed today.

Recovery is rapid and most patients resume their normal activities the same
day or the next day.

You may have no bleeding after the procedure or you may bleed for as long
as two weeks. The bleeding might also stop and then start again. These patterns
are all considered normal.

Use sanitary napkins, instead of tampons

You may experience menstrual-like cramps for a short time following your
procedure. You can take pain relieving medications, EXCEPT those containing
aspirin.

A post-operative examination about two weeks after the procedure will be
made to confirm that the uterus has returned to its normal size.

You may have sexual intercourse one week after the procedure, but be aware
that you can become pregnant again at that time. Birth control pills are
provided for free by your doctor at New York OB/GYN Associates.

Your next period is expected to begin sometime between four to eight weeks
from the day of the abortion.
Abortions are done most safely in the first trimester (before the 12th week of pregnancy). Pregnancy weeks are counted from the first day of the woman's most recent menstrual period. The type of abortion used depends on how far the pregnancy has progressed.
Surgical Abortion

Vacuum aspiration (the suction method) is the most common type of abortion. It is a surgical procedure that involves anesthesia and can be performed within the first trimester of pregnancy. In vacuum aspiration, the cervix (bottom part of the uterus) is gently "dilated" (opened) about a quarter-inch, a narrow tube is inserted through the vagina and cervix to the uterus, and then contents of the uterine internal lining are vacuumed out. The procedure takes only a couple minutes and the woman can usually return home later in the day.

Abortions are more rare in the second trimester, which begins in the 13th week of pregnancy. In these procedures, a medication called prostaglandin is generally given in a clinic. This results in uterine contractions, which can last some hours, and usually is accompanied by some anesthesia. Many doctors who will perform first-trimester abortions will not perform them during second trimester; women may need referral to specialists with greater experience here.

Third-trimester abortions (after 24 weeks) are reserved for severely deformed fetuses or for when the mother's life is in danger.

It depends on how far along you are. Sometimes there is a pill you can take, a D&C, there are so many different methods. It does hurt, very much. More emotionally than it does physically. There is very painful cramping all throughout the experience. You will bleed constantly for 2 weeks. During this period you will have to wear pads and take a shower, no baths. You have to wait at least 2 weeks before having sex again. It is reccommended that you wait six weeks. They may either put you totally to sleep, or you may get an area numbness. It is usually your choice, depending on how far along you are in the pregnancy. I don't know but I have been told it hurt a lot and not just physical pain but mental as well. The not knowing of what could have been. I would tell your friend if she has to have a abortion one time then she doesn't need to be having sex.

If you have the option get a general anesthetic!! Then it doesnt hurt at all. They will do the entire thing while your asleep.
You will be able to have sex after I think ...its 2 weeks to a month. You will be on strong antibiotics, and you will probably go through a very emotional period of about a month or two. This is only my experiance and its different emotionally for different women. Good luck, you will be OK.
