Why would you want to strap your knee now?

Using a brace can actually make the muscles surrounding your knee weaker. Your muscles become reliant upon the brace for support instead of the muscles being strong enough to support you. Assuming you went through physical therapy after the surgery, and you have been maintaining your strength via exercises, there really should be no need for a brace.

If you are at all unsure of your knee, you need to go back to the physical therapist to check that your knee is working o.k. A good sports physical therapist can then evaluate if you have any muscle weakness that may affect your knee stability. The ACL should be as healed as it is going to be at this stage - you have as much chance of tearing it again as you have with your other knee.

I do use Kinesio tape extensively to help the muscles work properly in such situations. Check out www.kinesiotaping.com If your physical therapist uses such tape, learning to tape yourself with it will be much more beneficial than using a brace or regular athletic tape. Kinesio tape works more with your body to help it than anything else.

Good luck!

Best bet is to go to your local pharmacy or sporting good store and buy a knee brace with a hing and velcro straps. They cost about $30.00. Thats what I use for my ACL

My husband has had this done a few times now...my suggestion would be to get a neoprene brace...they are soft enough that you can wear them under your clothes but give you better support than an ACE wrap...also they are inexpensive. The best braces out there for someone who is more athletic are the fiberglass ones that the doc has to take custom measurements for and order it for you. I have a feeling these are really expensive but my husband's was paid for by Worker's Comp...so I don't really know how much they are.
