HD is geared towards contractors and builders, whereas Lowe's is targeting the do-it-yourself homeowner. You can see the difference in their stores--Lowe's offers more decorating merchandise and the stores are generally cleaner and more orderly, whereas HD looks like it's original concept, which was a big warehouse full of building supplies. Lowe's offers better service to the customer who needs a lot of assistance

We've got a Lowes and a HD within a quarter mile of each other. Lowes seems to have a better overall selection. Prices are a wash; I rarely see any significant difference. Neither cater well to contractors; Sutherlands and others do a better job there. Lowes has more checkout lanes open and is much quicker to open more lanes if things back up. HD is better lit. Lowes is easier to find help.

Just my local observation.

I don't find much difference in customer service between either store (in fact, I find that customer service is getting increasingly worse at almost all stores). However, Lowe's seems to have a better selection and slightly better pricing.

I prefer Home Depot. They generally have good service, except the store in Campbell, CA. That particular store sucks. I haven't been to a lot of Lowes though.

Lowes by far. i cringe at the thought of the depot.

At least Lowes has more than one cashier open so i know i'll be in and out. If i need assistance - there's always someone that knows what they're talking about.

as for quality, maybe its the same but personal preference i like the tools at lowes better.

Home Depot does, they offer a slightly larger amount of products, and there employees seem to know a little more about their products than Lowe's

It depends from store to store because different stores in different neighborhoods have different sets of employees. I've seen both brands have stores that were understaffed or have a lot of unmotivated employees walking around. The only way to appropriately answer that question for yourself is to visit both stores in your area and find out.
