I've been stricken with a desire to understand more about this, though I'm not sure why. I'm looking for suggestions on good books, online resources- basically any extensive information. Deafness, muteness, limited mobility, etc. anything really, I just want to learn more. Any suggestions on where to look would be helpful. Thanks.

Beyond Ramps by Marta Russell is a good place to start. Moving Violations by John Hockenberry. Waist-High in the World by Nancy Mairs. Just a few titles to get you going. What you will encounter is anger at the discriminatory and exclusionary practices in our society, the humor and depth of thought of these writers, and a look at your own attitudes about people who are different. This calling of yours to understand disability will take you a long way towards understanding how society is structured to privilege some at the expense of others, and how our fears of difference underly much of the violence and greed of society. I admire you for looking into this area of inquiry.

Does purely mental disabilities count? I and my husband have asbergers. For us, we have problems remember to do things like schedual doctors appointments, or what day it is in the week. We're also jobless and nocturnal, so that also factors in. We don't handle new situations well, so we usually stay home, and don't really talk to new people. Sometimes we'll just lock up when faced with a simple task, like having both hands full, a table, and being told to get a plate. Yes, all we have to do is put something down and get the plate, but what? and where? It's silly, but we lock up sometimes. We're relitively lucky; it's not something we notice most of the time. But then, no-one else notices it for what it is, either... they see the problems, not the reasons for the problems. I don't know any good books about asbergers, I've read a few, but they're by 'normals', people who don't have it, and... they don't get it.

Having a disability FORCABLY REWRITES the disabled person's life. It's a harsh, forced march into wisdom and humility and being out of step with the world.

For most disabilities, it is also an anxiety-ridden, financially nauseating running battle with an insurance company that can deny the disability and impoverish the claimant. (There are a log of horror stories on blogs on the internet about this).

Most people shun the disabled, too, as if they were lepers.

There is an underground of disabled people who faked suicide ATTEMPTS so they could get social security disability even though they didn't have 40 quarters of earning a living.

Each dissability presents each person a different challenge. Some dont deal with the challenges as well as others. There is no one answer, but if you put any subject into a search engine you will surely find the most common answers for any and all dissabilities. Old age is the most common cause of a range of dissabilities that most all people eventually reach, so hold doors for older people, we cant walk , see, hear, or think as fast as we used to, sometimes we cant judge distances and tend to fall. Be kind, be helpful, and dont ever look down on any dissability, because you could have it tomorrow.

disability usually means you become poor because you can't work. Government does not pay much even if you qualify. Hard to buy medicine and food.
