The recovery process depends on the substance/action addicted to.

If the issue is a substance abuse problem, sometimes detox treatment is necessary to ensure you stay as healthy as possible throughout the process.

If you are attempting to quit smoking, (which I have struggled with for years) I have found that cold turkey is the only way for me. I do not plan ahead to quit on a certain day, I just decide "that's it!" and throw the cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters, and anything that reminds me of them away.. I ensure that people around me know that I have decided to quit, and that I need their help.

... I've quit several times for at least a year a piece, but I have started again. So, I am certain there are better ways to maintain being without.. but the cold turkey method works to quit, perhaps not for long-term use.

If you are struggling with an addiction to gambling, porn, or other actions.. I believe it is best to seek out groups with others who have gone through your struggles and understand your emotions.
By maintaining contact with them, you can have a great support system.

Alcohol is a beast of its own.. It strongly depends on the degree
of alcoholism and the reasons behind it. I know some who have been able to quit cold turkey, others who have quit with programs/support groups. There are others who try everything
and still struggle with the battle. I would first seek counseling,
finding out more about your personal reasons.. and then perhaps being referred to a more specialized program, depending on your needs.

The best thing for stopping ANY addiction, is to have some form of support system. Without someone to lean on from time to time, it can feel quite overwhelming. Whether you can speak with friends, relatives, professionals, people at groups.. etc. A form of support can be a lifesaver.

I wish you the absolute best.... take care.

First you have to want/desire to. Then it is good to learn about the addicting agent throught the library or the Internet, so you can be aware of the side effects, the physical part of the problem. Then for the psychological part, it is also important to see why you got into this addiction? What were you looking for, or what did you think you needed? How were you 'hooked'? When you understand, you can decide easier, but often you likely need moral support from others who have conquered their addiction. You will likely need to break your relationships with those who are addicted but who don't want to change, if you really want to change. You need to have something else in your life to turn to, while you are turning away from addiction. Complex
