First of all, there *is* no "ovulation period". You ovulate, then you *have* ovulated. It takes minutes, not days.
Most women ovulate between 12 and 16 days before their next period. 14 days is only an *average*, and, like most averages, is actually *wrong* for most women. (If you expected *every* woman to be 5'4" tall just because that's average, you would usually be wrong!)
As far as whether to consider spotting a period, the answer is no. The first day of your period is the first day of red bleeding. But it *won't* help you determine when you are most fertile.
Please read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler for *accurate* information on determining when you are most fertile. It is a great book, and it is written by an expert.

the first day of actual flow is the first day of your LMP - so i'd say the 16th.

I would go with the regular day - spotting can really happen at any time.
Peace (and good luck!)

If it was just spotting then it was not a period until you did start.
Go to http://www.mymonthlycycles.com and put in your period info and it will calculate when you will be fertile and ovulating.
Good luck
