There are two likely reasons why you cannot sleep. Either your body's natural rhythm is out of sync because of a chemical imbalance, or you are simply preoccupied with thoughts which keep you awake. Both can be treated chemically, but if your problem is likely more related to stresses in your life, you may want to assess why you are stressed and how you can resolve them.
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain which is involved in normal sleep cycles. Concentrations of melatonin increase before bedtime. Taking a melatonin tablet just before you sleep may help that process along.
There are certain foods which contain a natural precursor to melatonin, most notably milk and turkey (one reason why people always feel sleepy after the Thanksgiving meal- although Uncle Frank's long diatribes about how everything is too expensive nowadays may also bring that about).
Antihistamines (like Benadryl) and sleeping pills contain active ingredients which, besides making you drowsy, may help you fall asleep faster.
These chemicals aren't "cures". They work temporarily, and if taken over a prolonged period of time, they may initially produce prolonged (daytime) drowsiness, followed by chemical dependency.
The best cure, in my own personal experience, is to try to follow a normal sleep-wake cycle. Even if you cannot fall asleep until very late, try to get to bed at a regular hour. Don't focus on trying to consciously bring about sleep- thinking about it will only make you more awake. And, again, if you are thinking about work or personal stresses, try to work on resolving them (but during the day, not at night). Sleeping pills, antiistamines, and melatonin can help you fall asleep faster, but they won't cause you to fall asleep. To do that you need to 1. Go to bed at normal hours and wake at normal hours and 2. Not think about things that cause you to stay awake.

Yoga considers mind and the prevailing thoughts to be composed of matter. Through the practice of mental concentration (dharana) one can understand the science of yoga. Once skilled at this practice of performing yoga, one begins to learn to manipulate and unfold the mysteries of nature.
The first step to performing Yoga is to still and calm the mind, hence achieving the strengthening of ones body and mind. If one is able to still ones mind one can feel the spiritual power within (which is developed by practicing Yoga through Ayurvedic standards), and it is the power of yogic concentration.
Yoga helps to bring natural order and balance to the body constituents and hormonal structure and metabolism in the body.
The various Yogic postures (Asanas) & exercises improve endocrine metabolism, thus providing a preventive shield to protect the body from the outside diseases and providing internal energy and strength to fight diseases.
Yogic postures activate the various energies that have accrued and idled in the energy cells of the body - since left torpid, these energies create various diseases.
Yogic postures & exercises (Asanas) cleanses ones body, mind and conscience by releasing toxins from the body and this will solve to cure insomnia.

Get up. Turn on radio. Listen to Art Bell and his guests unusual stories and viewpoints. Light reading. Watch tv. Have some tape recordings of some of your favorite comedy reruns that you've seen a few times and still likeo---it crowds out what you might be worried about.

I went through that myself when things weren't so good. Because I am in charge of my body and soul I took care of it by taking Tylenol PM. I took it for many months until when I realized it could harm my liver. So you know life changes and the things that make you feel sleepless mean nothing anymore. So I became wiser and went for Chamomile tea and evvvvverry now and then a couple of beers, wine, vodka-tonic that will relax me and make me go to sleep. Keep in mind that situations in our current lives might make us sleepless, like I am a single mother with a fourteen year old boy to raise and with one income and I still manage to sleep good, stay off drugs if that's what's making you sleepless. They're crappy and bad as there's better ways to feel good in life.
