Even though the files are in AAC, you may be importing them at a high bitrate. The higher the bitrate, the higher the quality, the larger the file size. You can check the quality settings for importing in iTunes settings.

If you import your music at 128kbps you should be able to add roughly 500 songs to your Nano.

change the settings to file type and check the quality of sound you saving at, I have a 2 gig PC version and have over 300 with tons of room left

It really depends on the quality of the songs (measured in kbit/sec) and how long the songs are. If you have long, high-quality songs, you will hold less number of songs.
