You don't. In this business you have to know people....plus you have to be prepared to bend over and have your music, appearance, style controlled by these people. All the more reason to cut them out completely and promote yourself through internet sites (and through word of mouth.....like MYSPACE.COM) for instance. There are a few artists out there who have become famous and have made MORE money (money that doesn't get ripped off or eaten by the record company) promoting themselves through networking. Eventually you will be noticed if you merit it. And with Satellite Radio taking off, more artists can have their music heard by more fans with differing tastes (if your musical genre is not mainstream)......as one of the artists from Pink Floyd eluded "It's hard to make music when it's not appreciated, because it won't sell Coke".......mainstream music nowadays has to sell other products (mass-marketing...mass appeal)....so a lot of good artists with merits get left behind unfortunately. So make your own destiny, avoid the leeching soul-stealing recording industry heavy-weights and promote yourself through the net.....it will take some time but at least you will have more control over your music without selling your soul to these greedy soul-sucking scumbags.

Good day.

Actually, they don't send them to publishers. They send them to record companies and recording agents. If they are selected by the company, then they are asked to provide lead sheets and tabs as well as recordings in the # of 20 or so pieces. The agent or recording company then lets artists pick through them and decide which they want if they want any of them at all. You get paid by the song that is recorded AND released. If it is recorded and not released, you do not get paid.

Try taxi.com. They're a wonderful service that hooks up artists with companies who can use their music.
