Answer questions on yahoo- questions!

At least lately, that's what I've been doing. I have severe sleep problems and if this is a serious question you have definitely asked an expert.

A lot has to do with when I last got some real sleep. If I slept last night and are in pretty good shape mentally- I read, watch TV if I can do it without bother others. If I haven't slept in awhile I tend to get restless and pace. I get anxious and worried because I know what can happen if I don't sleep. Sometimes a hot shower helps. If my restless legs are hampering my sleep, I use tennis balls in a sock to try and work loose the muscles some. The only cure for racing thoughts is doing the mundane. You know, busy stuff. Clean. Not anything that takes real concentration or thought(that's why yahoo answer is such a good choice).

There was a day when I could take a Valerian pill and go to sleep. There was a time when I'd tried every prescription out there and still didn't sleep more then 20 minutes/ night for months!

Never stay in bed when you can't sleep. Get up and do something, make use of the time if you can.

Notice I changed the person here- from 1st person to 3rd. I went from telling you what I do today when I can't sleep to advising based on my past experience. Hope you don't mind.

Put a few drops of lavender oil on my pillow, just enough so I can smell it - if I can I put on some soft music - preferably some of that relaxation music because it really does help even if it isn't your usual choice of "sounds" - lie back and listen - often if you can't sleep it is your own mind keeping you awake - give it something else to do and before you know it you'll be out of it. Another technique involves hypnotising yourself. Do the same as the above and take slow deep breaths and starting with your toes and working upwards you tell yourself how heavy and relaxed each part of your body feels, until it really does feel heavy and relaxed and you truly can't be bothered trying to lift it... of course, this is not an instant fix for sleeplessness, but worth trying if you suffer from it regularly... could be you are also a nightowl who is just not programmed to go nighty-night like the average person! Night Owls were "invented" I believe because you need entertainers, stage performers, shift workers, politicians etc. who CAN work nights and odd hours so if you are a night owl, don't beat yourself up about it - just find a lifestyle to match your natural patterns.
Another good trick is get a TV and DVD player and put in your room - many people fall asleep in front of the TV - you can do it and already be in bed. Choose the most boring movie you can find - one you really don't like - you have it just loud enough to hear without being able to focus on what is being said... you'll bore yourself to sleep!

1. Listen to audiobooks. If you have an ipod you can buy them online. Youre brain will get tired after awhile, and drift off. And even if it takes several hours, at least you are improving your mind in the process.

2. Think of absolutely nothing, when something enters your mind, which it will, sweep it out and think of nothing.

Surf the net, sometimes answer people's questions until I notice that I start making spelling errors, then I can fall asleep.
