I really want to get a tattoo, however, my parents are both very against them. One reason is because of their personal hatred toward them, the other is that my family is Jewish, and some believe it is against the Jewish faith to tattoo your body, claiming that it is "destroying the body G-d gave you." However, I dont see it as destroying a body, i see it as a new part of you. What should i do?

You;ll have to decide for yourself. If you get one that your parents find out about, you'll have to put up with some flack.

Perhaps they don't need to know? (Are you legally adult?)

On the other hand, what the heck can they do once you get it?

The Torah states explicitly that "you should not put a tattoo on your body." (Leviticus 19:27) This is accepted Jewish practice, Is written in the Code of Jewish Law - Yoreh Deah 180:1.

Samson Raphael Hirsch, (19th century, Germany) explains the reason for this prohibition. God made man in the image of God Himself (Genesis 1:26). Of course, this doesn't mean that God looks like us, but it does mean that our body is a finite expression of God's infinite wisdom. One Midrash even says that Abraham figured out all the mitzvahs by looking at different parts of his body! And as Job said, "In my flesh, I see God" (Job 19:26).

Imagine that you own a house with a huge glass window overlooking the beautiful mountainside. Imagine how clearly you see the trees, the snow, and even the deer running down the mountain. Now imagine a toddler full of dirt and chocolate smearing his hands all over your window. When you look out the window, what do you see? Nothing but a glaze of dirt, chocolate, and a fuzzy mountain in the background.

The body is a window to the soul, which is a spark of the Infinite. Tell your husband: Please on't muddy up your window with handprints.

I have a friend who's Jewish and won't get a tattoo because of his faith. But it depends on YOUR faith and belief. As long as you don't see it as a way of defaceing the body God gave you, why not? You see it as enhancing to body God gave you. And that's what really matters. If you want to get it, then get it. But if you are going to feel an immense sense of guilt afterwards, then maybe it's not the best thing. Do what you feel is right. Good luck.

I think it would really convince your parents if you got the Jewish star. Just tell them its not going to be too big, and place it in a spot where it wont be seen in the work place, since a lot of companies are against tattoos. Good Luck!!!!

My first advise is never to tattoo your body. Its not smart, for
a lot of reasons. But if you must, then do a temporary, for
a couple of months and see. Then you can get rid of it with
mineral oil. Then do another temporary. And get rid of it
when you're ready. This way you don't get stuck for life.

Wouldn't showing your devotion be not getting one, seeing as how it's against the faith?

You have to make that desision for yourself. A tattoo is something that you are stuck with for a while. Although you can have them removed it is very costly. Don't do it for anyone but ur self. Good luck
