I believe you are referring to "A Time to Kill" by John Grisham.

There was also a movie which was critically acclaimed. It stars Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey.

Are you thinking about 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee??
The Lawyer's name was Atticus Finch and it is told from the perspective of his daughter, Scout. He defends a black man because his daughter was raped by two guys and then the guys wind up dead. He has to defend the black man because of his principles. Because no one else will stand up for him.
