The name Lead Zeppelin had been suggested by Keith Moon when Page was considering forming a supergroup with the drummer. Keith Moon himself got the phrase from John Entwistle's term for a bad gig, describing it as "going over" (some sources say "going down") "like a lead zeppelin".[7] The group adopted the name, deliberately dropping the 'a' in Lead to prevent people from pronouncing it as "leed". Actually, Keith Moon (The Who's drummer) said the band's music went over like a lead baloon, which was changed into Led Zeppelin. Then they concocted the story about their music being light, yet heavy at the same time......hence, Led Zeppelin. They were rehearsing as The New Yardbirds when the name change took place. Moon almost joined them, but decided to stick with The Who.

Zeppelin have been given it particularly is call from The who's drummer, Keith Moon. After The Yardbirds disbanded, Jimmy website pronounced to Keith and pals that he became beginning his very own band. Keith Moon jokingly pronounced it would circulate over like a "lead zeppelin". meaning it would sink speedy! Jimmy cherished that yet dropped the "a" from the notice "lead" so human beings would not mispronounce it "leeed zeppelin." To website the call completely defined what he wanted to do with the song. some gentle, some heavy. Led Zeppelin. gentle and coloration. and that's precisely what Zeppelin did. delicate acoustic mixed with no longer trouble-free electric all in an identical composition made their song very effective. And no longer something like that have been heard earlier. wish this helped!

I heard the name came when someone said that their music went over like a "lead balloon" and so they adopted the name Led Zeppelin. Not sure how true it is, but heard that more than once over the years.
