217k on the original engine and transmission?

First, let me congratulate you on a car that's probably well taken-care-of. Second, did you perform the required transmission services and flushes during the tranny's lifetime?

Even if you did, 217k is a great amount of miles. I'm not surprised, if it's the original transmission, that it finally gave out. The typical life on a tranny is about 125-135k these days.

If you love the car and want to keep it, you'll want to get in contact with a transmission specialty mechanic and see if it would be feasible to re-build the tranny...though in all truth, it will probably be less money to replace it. Either way, with proper maintenance (depending on the marque, of course), your car ought to run for quite a while longer yet when you have the transmission repaired. Consider your options, and good luck!

The transmission is getting ready to go completely out. You do not say what vehicle you have, so I can't be specific in my advice, but in general, you want to now decide it the vehicle is worth the cost of repair.

What is the general condition of the vehicle? Can you get a used transmission installed, or a rebuilt one? What would be the cost?
What are you using the vehicle for? Do you like the car, or were you planning on replacing it soon? How much is it costing you on average for repairs now (not counting the transmission)?

If you can replace the transmission for $1200 and that will allow you to get another 2 years use out of the vehicle, the transmission will cost you $50 for each month's use. Add that $50 to the average cost of repairs, and that gives you the cost of keeping the vehicle.

What is a replacement vehicle going to cost you? Compare the costs and the benefits, and decide if it is worthwhile to repair your vehicle!

the finest American Tragedy is that we save repeating heritage, through no longer learning from the previous. we make sure to understand what has got here about and do some thing to really replace what got here about so it received't ensue back. Beside deliberating my own tragedy, the record you've above is exceedingly superb. In my time, i'd assume 911 to have made the most important effect on human beings, because of it being so present day, unpredicted and the way it stuck us off shelter.

Depends on the transmission. Normally 1st and reverse use the same gear. Sounds like maybe the sprague went out or there's a valve froze up.

Reverse is usually one of the first gears to go. 217k is quite a good length. I'd say its probly time for a new vehicle:)

It maybe time to tell your car good bye, you might be able to fix or replace the transmission, but then when you start pulling an old car apart bad things can happen, you might find more bad things.

you won't feel reverse slip because it's only 1 gear........and 217k is a lot of miles for one car............no sense in fixing it..........junk it. When you put your car in reverse, do you ever stop? or do you just throw it in when it's still rolling?
