yes, you will pass out first before you die, and you can't hold your breath while passed out.

You could die from holding your breath, but you pass out before you have a chance to die. When you pass out, you lose consiousness, which means you lose control over your body's functions. Your involuntary functions that you don't have to think about to control (breathing, heart beating, etc) still go, but you can't force yourself to hold your breath or even move while you're passed out.

Holding one's breath is a deliberate conscious act. (it requires will). If breath can be witheld long enough, you will pass out and breathing will recommence. Breathing does not requirewillpower. It is automatic and orchestrated by the primitive brainstem. No consciousness is needed in order to breath.

Well, I asked the same question few times back. The answer is No Before you about to die your cerebral cortex shuts down your reflex center (i.e. voluntarily holding breath) causing you to faint and breathing starts automatically.

true.
breathing in humans is not a consciously-controlled action. if you held your breath until you passed out, you would reflexively begin breathing again. ergo, unless you were underwater or something, you certainly wouldn't be able to hold your breath long enough to die.

It's true! You can hold your breath until you pass out, but as soon as you do, you'll start breathing again! cool, huh?

I don't think so. Our basic instinct is to survive. Provided you're a sane person, you have a will to survive and so you can't hold your breath until you die - when you start to feel like you're going to pass out you will take in air. Just a thought.

That is true. If you hold your breath, you will pass out. When that happens, you lose consciousness, and your brain does the same thing it does when you sleep: tells you to breathe.

Yup. In fact it's be pretty hard to hold your breath till you pass out. Anyway, braething is involuntary, you don't need to concentrate on doing it. If we had to, we would all be dead the first time we fell asleep.
