Primitive people not able to understand physical phenomena called them gods.
In ancient Greece, they started naming gods the ideas behind the physical phenomena.
Initially people understood matter, thus the created Gaea (something like Earth, or mass - matter) and Uranus (something like Universe, Sky, Energy).
Then they replaced them, since they understood the importance of time, by Rhea (Goddess meaning who moves and changes) and Cronus (God of time - within time everything starts and finishes).
When they became wiser, the Greeks created ZEUS (the one who unites and brakes everything, since life and Universe is a continuous change and transformation of items and particles. For example some are born from the union of two, like most animals, water is the combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen, etc. And by braking, like persons from family, multiplication of amoebae, from ore we get single metal and other products.
Since not all the people were ready to accept ONE principle, they were present Zeus in different phases, so we have the different gods, like:
Hera, Athena, Artemis, Hestia, Hephaestus, Ares, Apollo, Hermes, etc.
Going back to time, before some authors wrote and distinguished the gods and their "properties", all of them were Zeus!

I find it interesting that there even elder gods, the Titans. Gaea, the Earth Goddess, Uranus was the first ruler and son of Gaea who then mothered the rest of the Titans with her son, then Cronus son of Uranus who was the father of Zeus. Zeus who in turn, overthrew the Titans started a new pantheon that became the Olympians. Very interesting stuff...here read some more...enjoy

Well, it'll be a bit hard to give you a good idea but here goes, in Greek mythology, Zeus was the king of the gods and quite the philanderer. He was married to his sister Hera but had lots, and lots of kids with other women, both mortal and goddesses. He was god of the sky and had thunderbolts he threw at people he didn't like. Hera was god of motherhood and quite jealous of Zeus' other women. He had to hide them from her. Most of the gods and goddesses were his children except for his two sisters and two brothers. Hera, Demeter (goddess of the harvest) Posiedon (god of the sea) and Hades (god of death and the afterlife) He deligated tasks to his children to be gods off such as Apollo the sun god and god of music who dealt with the 9 muses, Artemis, goddes of the hunt and the moon, twin to Apollo she took a vow of virginity but broke it to have 50 children with a sheep herd. Hephastus, Smithy god, son of Zeus and his wife, Hera dropped him off mount Olympus because he was so ugly and he broke his legs but a nymph found him and raised him and when Hera found that he had learned to make beautifuly jewelry she took him back. Hermes, personal messenger to Zeus, god of the cross roads, thieves and mischief makers, and Athena, goddes of wisdom and tactics in warfare. There were many lesser gods who were both children of the other gods and zeus. Then there was Aphrodite who was born when the blood from Chronus' death fell into the sea, she was goddess of beauty, love and sex. She married Hephastus becuase his mother, Hera told him to tell her that although he was ugly and cripple he worked late and made lovely jewlry. She settled on him and had many afairs with the other gods and mortals. There is a lot more to it than this, the affairs of the Greek myths are quite involved. Find a good book to tell you.

try google, there should be lots out there. Lots of books on the subject too. There are many stories and they are fun to read. Zeus is supposed to be the god of the gods so to speak, and live on Mt. Olympus above the clouds. All the gods eat is ambrosia, and they love to mess with mortals. They love to mess with each other also...read about it!

One of the best resources is "Mythology" by Edith Hamilton. It's got the skinny on the Greeks, Romans and Norse gods. Good Luck!
