One can be inspired and still not act because they lack motivation :) I have been inspired by beautiful front gardens... alas, I lack the motivation to go out and do something with my messy front yard! See what I mean? Inspiration is great... but if you want to get something done with it, you have to have motivation!

For me, inspiration begets motivation. The two are very definitely NOT the same thing. Inspiration comes from external forces, usually positive, even sublime. Motivation comes from within. It is our internal drive.

While motivation should, ideally, be the stronger force (it is self-directed, after all), for me, inspiration is the more powerful. Left to my own devices, my motivation is sometimes sadly lacking. But when inspired (especially by that greatest of all inspirations: Love), I am motivated to accomplish literally anything.

You are doubtless familiar with the Greek Muses and the adopted term, the muse, that serves as inspiration for the artist, poet, musician or any other creative profession. Well, I am a writer, and my best writing (by far) comes when I am inspired. My muse is Love, specifically the object of that affection. Just as Love conquers all else, so too does this muse inspire me to be the very best I can be.

So, by that standard, inspiration is unquestionably stronger than motivation, because motivation is lost without it. And so am I.

Simply having aspirations is not enough. And even being motivated to act on our aspirations is often not enough. If inspiration is the fuel that drives cars, I often think of motivation as the manual pushing that's necessary when you run out of fuel!

The difference between motivation and inspiration is this: Motivation causes you to act from a negative place. In other words, you may think, "If I don't do X, I won't get Y -- so I'd better do X!". Inspiration causes you to take action from a positive place. So when you're inspired, you think, "If I do X, then I'll get Y -- so let's do X!".

First let's define so we are all clear -

MOTIVATION: The act or process of motivating.
The state of being motivated.
Something that motivates; an inducement or incentive

INSPIRATION: 1. Stimulation of the mind or emotions to a high level of feeling or activity.
The condition of being so stimulated.
An agency, such as a person or work of art, that moves the intellect or emotions or PROMPTS ACTION or invention.
Something, such as a sudden creative act or idea, that is inspired.
The quality of inspiring or exalting: a painting full of inspiration.
Divine guidance or influence exerted directly on the mind and soul of humankind.

2. that extraordinary or supernatural divine influence vouchsafed to those who wrote the Holy Scriptures, rendering their writings infallible.
------------------------------...
Well, the question isn't which one is required to do something, it's which is stronger. I say inspiration is stronger. Many have said that 'you don't need inspiration to be all creative to do something' or things like that, but that would make it a stronger move wouldn't it? Motivation gets you to do things, yes. Motivation could be someone cheering you on from the sidelines or someone offering a million dollar reward (the inducement, incentive). The results and how they would make you feel would be positive, yes, but it's like just a reward. When you are inspired by something, you don't really need to have a reward at the end or the "motivation" to do it . . being inspired means you WANT to do it and it comes from inside, therefore I say it would be much stronger than someone doing something out of simple motivation. The fact that there is a definition alluding to the force inside of those who wrote the Holy Scripture as inspiration also shows that it is a much stronger force.

Well...things will be very clear if you can seperate these two words and understand them individually.

Inspiration is something that you derive from outside...like saying, he inspires me alot through his work...or I take inspiration from his work.

Motivation is something self-driven. The self has to drive the person's motivation.

Even you get inspired by others, if you are not motivated by self, there is no point in taking inspiration.

I think both are stronger, and both are related, hence u cannot seperate and ask which is better...

Inspiration gives birth to motivation. So inspiration is stronger because motivation wouldn't exist without it.

Motivation,Patz. Why do you always need to know WHY,my friend??

Your friendship inspired and motivated me to come here and try to come up with an answer for you.Ok?;)

Edit:

I agree with Mac,to a point.I,too,find it difficult to motivate myself,frequently.

And I agree with anaussie, above, too.I have this same problem!;)

Not all things/persons that inspire me motivate me.Some, for one reason or another, even depress and "paralyze" me.

Motivation comes from the strongest inspirations, not from all of them and,for this reason,I find it stronger. Two forces, external and internal, working together.Motivation always contain inspiration, but not all inspiration is motivational, for me.
