Yes, some obese people take up two seats and that costs the airline money. It's not the airline's fault that the customer is overweight and they can't lose money because of that. Besides, it's not a new idea to charge more for obese people. Most clothing manufacturers charge more for the very large sizes. The point is, companies can not be responsible for obese people and there is no reason for companies to lose money on them.

Wow, that's a great question. I don't want somebody's butt on me, but what about a giant? (I mean a person who suffers from gigantism.) Or someone with casts on both arms?
I think that if they can't fit into a seat with the arms down, other passengers should not be made to share their seats, but I just can't see how they charging people extra for their disabilities is right.
I guess if the airlines lose enough money on overweight people, they have no choice but to charge them for two seats. Still, I bet they don't offer a discount to little people.
Very tricky problem.

I think if airlines are going to do this practice they must standardize it. They can't leave it up to the customer reps to determine who is fat and who is not. For example, if you weigh more than 320 pounds you must pay more for your ticket. I think it is probably frustrating to some overweight passengers, because some customer reps let them fly with one ticket and some force them to buy two. All that being said, I think it is necessary for cash strapped airlines at the moment. They have a maximum weight limit for luggage, they have a right to do the same for passengers. I work at Boeing and often read reports of airlines doing anything and everything possible to reduce the weight onboard their aircraft. Afterall, a heavier aircraft cost more to fly. American airlines recently said that reducing 50 pounds from each flight saves them more than 1 million dollars annually. Thats a lot of money for airlines that are having to stiff their employees to avoid bankruptcy.

YES YES YES! I pay for my seat and then end up sharing it with some big arm or butt shoved on my side. It's uncomfortable. If they don't fit in one seat, they should have to buy two or find some other way to get there. I shouldn't be made to be uncomfortable for the entire flight just because the airline wants to cram as many people in coach class as possible.
That irks me!

If I have to pay for 2 seats, I better get 2 seats. as a matter of point I'll buy the whole row, I'm 6'5" and I want to stretch out, so I'll buy the row, then I can lay down comfortably. I saw a fat guy that had to pay for 2 seats but only got one seat. What is up with that? If they pay for 2 they should get 2, let them get comfortable.

If you are going to charge a person per pound for their plane ticket, you will have to do the same for luggage. Also, airline tickets are sold based on kind of an average amount of fuel needed to fly the weight of the plane, passengers, and cargo. So, it all averages out.

I think they should if they use more than one chair...lol...otherwise they would take away money from the airline for and unused "used" chair...or they could have half their butt on standby "u know if the plane doesnt get full they get a reduced price...so I think that have of thier butt should be on standby so they can get reduced seats...lol funny subject...touchy though too

I know this ruffles alot of feathers, but if they take part of another seat, they need to be respectful to other passengers and buy two.

No. That would be not only unfair but ridiculous. That is as bad as wanting to charge a pregnant woman for her un-born baby's fare.
