I'm sure for a college essay, you're going to want something more detailed, but I'd say the most important qualities in any family is honesty and communication... Both of which my family does not have, thus my parents are getting divorced. But I have learned what not to do, so when I get married in the future, my family will stay together forever. Honesty is the most important because a lot of what my parents are fighting about comes down to the basic one parent lying to the other, making unfulfilled promises, etc.. If both parties can come together and discuss things openly and honestly, problems can usually be worked out before they becoome an issue.

Interesting u should ask. i am involved with an alaskan native tribal gathering in a minor way. Elders from 11 villages have gathered to share and learn. A five day event that started today. Their goal is in restoration of their native languages as a way of restoring family. Tribal representatives from New Zealand, Maori are here sharing there successful language revitilization. Their report of great success with bringing their true heart, the language, back to "the people" brings hope to this community I am priviliged to work in. In my own family I have found respect and family history, or story telling of how it was, what papa did, and so on...brings a sense of being part of a bigger thing. Family gatherings, meals or games whatever, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc... is becoming a lost art.
Respect, we hear so much about pride, but respect must be their first. Great question

I think communication is the key to a strong family. I am a father of 6 and all my children knew there was no limit to what they could ask or discuss. A Christ centered home I think is also essential. Family meal times and the opportunity to have one on one conversation with each family member at least twice a week.

I have been marry for 11 years and have 3 kids. My husband is been to Iraq and Korea. What keep us together? Love and understanding of one another. Never go to bed angry, don't say hurtful things you can't take back. Spend lots of quality time together, that can be a day at the park even going to a movie together. Everything we plan we plan as a family and take everyone needs into consideration. Lots of prayer and Faith. May one day you can experience this and it wont be only research.
