A mile is just a convenient short form of ' one minute of arc of a great circle subtended at the centre of the planet'. Because the planet is not a perfect sphere the length varies but is generally defined as AN AVERAGE of 1.852m. This holds for any great circle but would be somewhat longer at the equator where the planet is 'fattest'. So, the nautical mile is not a linear unit but a measure of angle.
