I have no problem with women being auto technicians. But as others have said, you'll have beat up hands and forearms. And to a degree, I have to disagree with badmts on the pay. Yes, most shops pay flat rate, and in some cases, you can make good money. But if you have a service writer who has a "favorite tech" (No offense badmts), they get all the good paying "gravy" work, while others get the crap work, which doesn't pay well. So, there's two sides to the coin. Also, now, to work on vehicles, you literally have to know more than a Doctor! You will forever be going to schools (OK if you like it), and it's next to impossible to keep up with today's rapid technology growth. I don't want to discourage you if you want to be a tech, but I've been doing it for 27 years, and I'm just trying to paint a real world picture for you.

I took an online light vehicle mechanic course from U.S. Army distance learning program and worked as a lube tech for a while. I planned on moving up to a mechanic on 5 ton trucks or HMMWVs but then I got a nice cushy office job. From my own experience, the advantages I had were, I have smaller hands than the male mechanics, some things I can just reach better than them, I'm also smaller than a lot of the ones I worked with, so I can fit between the wheel and engine to replace filler necks and such, the only disadvantage I had was physical strength, which stopped being an issue about 4 months into my job. I work for a maintenance facility at an Army training center, and I can tell you we have a LOT of female mechanics, I have NEVER witnessed them being treated any differently from the men. Go for it, it's a good career if that's what you enjoy.

Being an auto-mechanic ain't a good job for anyone its hard work Rally hard work. I worked on cars for 30 years and now i cant do it anymore do to medical problems. But if you decide to do it the best way is to have your own shop. Because if you work for the man then he gets all the money and YOU do all the work. So trust me on this GET YOUR OWN SHOP. You can make real good money depending on how good you are at it. Back when i did work on them i was really good at it and was covered up all the time. I worked 12 to 14 hours a day ever day except Sundays and sometimes even Sundays. That's how busy i stayed from running my own shop and i made real good money like $1500 to $2000 a week so its up to you

if you don't mind cuts ,burns and dirty hands the sky is the limit-we have techs (i work for a HUGE OUTFIT 2500 locations!) working for us that make well over $100,000.00 a year (i can hear the naysayers now so let me break it down for you and them. Most people get paid for the number of hours they are PRESENT at the job site ,well good techs get paid on the FLAT RATE .to illustrate,I am a service writer and i called this guy and said you need XXX done to your car ,and the book says the AVERAGE tech can do the job in 7 hours ,well my tech did the job in less than 2 hours ,he still got paid for 7 hours but he only worked 2!!! now he gets $25.00 per flat rate hour and very few weeks does he flag less than 90-100 hrs a week-can you see the oportunity.you must be patient and fast and good to get to that level but you will never be out of a job !

auto mechanic, sure. but aviation mechanic A LOT more pay and more job security too. Just don't work with men who need big egos. Because if you know more than them, they tend to whine.

if you like working on cars, then i would say go for it,just be careful and dont let men take advanage of you just because your a woman.and i think if a woman can do the job as good as a man than i think they should get the same pay as a man.
