any books around the time period of slave holding or around the time period when they wore corsets it needs to be fiction though

I said before the slave or corsets time period but i didn't mean it had to have slaves or corsets in it. It would be even better if it was before then but i like books about america

Ignore the people who suggested Jane Austen novels; wrong country, wrong time period, wrong situations. GONE WITH THE WIND, of course! I've only read it about 10 times... it gives a great female perspective of those times, and there's plenty of melodrama. You also get a lot of the Southerner's perspective of the Civil War era, which is hard to get nowadays. (And I'm from California.)

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown...the same guy that wrote the Da Vinci Code...excellent book, contains the same character as in the "code".

uncle tom's cabin is a classic.. or the tom sawyer/huck finn books. A favorite of mine is Jane Eyre.
