i thought they called them sleepers

I don't know any dictionary words, but in our house they are called eye boogers.

It is blepharitis. I used to work for a group of Ophthalmologists and they all told me to clean eye with baby shampoo if/when this is a problem. I never tried it because I just couldn't make myself put shampoo, baby or otherwise, in my eye. But there you go. There's your definition. Two sites to see as reference below.

i've always called it "sleep", but i'm sure you could probably find or coin a technical/medical term based on the fact that the stuff is coagulated tear-drops

Jordan on Bernie Mac called it "eye snot" So that is what I cam sticking to it.

In Thai it's called (literally) 'eye-s.h.i.t'. Sorry don't know in English - just called 'sleep' in my house when I was a kid.
