FOIL First Outer Inner Last

2006-06-21 17:22:00 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

If the 8th grader can't get what FOIL stands for break it down:

(5+2)(4+2)

first take the front number (5) and multiply it by (4) those are the 2 front numbers in the parentheses
then multiply the FIRST front number (5) by the outside number of the second parentheses (2)
after that take the outside number of the first set (2) and multiply the front number of the 2nd set of parentheses (4) then repeat this time multiplying it to the outside number of the second set (2)

I just finished 8th grade. The FOIL method is easy, at least in algebra. Show the diagram that has the curved lines going from first letter in first set to first letter in second set and so on. It's simple, but don't introduce the new ways of doing this until they've mastered it and all it's applications. Otherwise, they will start to prefer one of them and forget the other.

foil stands for First, exterior, interior, final. For this subject, you may multiply the 1st numbers in each and each set of parentheses, which may be X x X. then you truly multiply the exterior numbers, that are X x 3. then multiply the interior numbers, which may be -2 x X. then you truly do the final blend, -2 x 3 you get X^2 + 3X - 2X - 6 observe: under no circumstances multiply numbers interior the comparable parentheses by making use of one yet another.

Huh? Never heard of it and I don't mean to be sarcastic, I'm a 46 yo man that just finished my first year of college and have honestly never heard of it. Really, I've worked 25 years in the real world, I broke my back and now find myself back in college to earn a different degree, I would really like to know what the FOIL method means, Help Please! Contact me and explain, I haven't seen it the math I'm doing in college, but is it something I should know or something that will help? Feel free to contact me and explain. Thanks

Here is an example

(2x+3)(5x+4)

First is 2x times 5x which equals 10x squared.
Outer would be 2x time 4=8x
Inner is 3 time 5x which equals 15x. Last is 3 times 4=12
Answer 10x squared+8x+15x+12
Simplified=10x squared+23x+12

Use the area of rectangles...make one big box and divide it into 4 smaller boxes. Then you need to make dimensions for the sides.

x.....................5
------------------------
|...........|...............|
|...........|...............| x
------------------------
|...........|...............|
|...........|...............| 3
------------------------

Then have them find the area of each small box, by multiplying the length by width:

x*x=x^2
5*x=5x
3*x=3x
3*5=15

Add the little areas to find the big area:

x^2 +5x + 3x + 15

x^2 + 8x + 15

That is what I would do. Also, I use this method to teach how to factor, by giving them the small areas, and they have to figure out the dimensions along the sides.
