olympics....marathon to be exact...not today's but mile running and sprinting...

For a sport? That's a very complex question. Running/track competitions have been around for a very long time. Men used to compare their strength and athleticism by dueling with weapons, hunting, etc. I'd say that of modern sports, soccer is one of the oldest.

I don't know if this really counts for what you are looking for, but relay races were run in the original Greek games. That requires a team, but I don't think too many fans are cheering from the stands these days.

If you're talking about just american teams...it's the Chicago Cubs (1876...called the White Stockings back then).
