What is the best thing ever done for the world...in your opinion

The germ theory of disease and antibiotics would have to rank pretty high.

Writing, paper, ink, and printing have allowed us to record knowledge and build on it. Without written records, culture would only include what people could memorize.

Unfortunately, I don't see your two questions as being complimentary. I don't consider man's greatest achievement as something done for "the world." I think our greatest achievement was walking on the moon. The sheer force of will and collaboration that it took to make such an act possible is mind boggling, especially with the technology of the 1960s and 70s. Despite being such an immense achievement, I don't think it technically did anything "for the world," nor was it required to. It was exploration for exploration's sake, and it was worth every penny.

The discovery and understanding of electricity has lead to so many of the other "achievments" people have mentioned. There's also refrigeration, computers, telephones, satellites, MP3 players, TV, electric light, etc. Electricity is number 1 in my book.

The nuclear bomb. As tragic as it was it woke up the entire world as to what direction we were going and the whole world realized it had to be changed.
