On the one hand, tyo make the electricity, the power plant burns fuel; so they burn fuel to make electrictiy, and you use that electricity to power the weed eater. One could think it's more efficient to use gas directly. However one can also reasonnably assume that the power plan is more efficient with fuel than the two stroke engine of the weed eater.
Usually the gas ones are more powerful and you can run them all day far from an outlet, but they are noisy, whilst electric ones have to be near an outlet or the battery dies quicky (probably good for your own home but not for a professional gardener) and have lower power but are quieter.

Overall, the electric will be cheaper, once you consider the purchase price and the cost to run the string trimmer. But the major difference is convenience!! I have had both and wouldn't trade my gas trimmer for electric ever again. My gas trimmer is a four stroke engine and is quieter and cleaner than older two stroke models. I have almost 500 feet of fence in my back yard and gas is way better than fighting with extension cords or waiting for a battery to recharge.

I would recommend the electric model just because it won't give off such horrible fumes like the gas ones do.

Theelectric one is easier, you don't have to go and get the gas, and once it is charged your ready to go. We use a battery/ electric one and we love it.
