Men were wearing corsets as early as the 1790s in England and France. Most commonly short waist cinchers, although some full corsets for men were worn.

In the 19th century, Victorian men wore corsets "as a means to have a dignified, stiff bearing when wearing a uniform." They weren't the same type of corsets with the tiny waists the women wore, but more cylindrical. They served to smooth the waist and to give good posture. According to one modern corset making webiste "The use and wear of corsets by men historically was not an uncommon practice. Not only did it provide sturdy back support for activities such as riding and hunting, but it also created the very narrow waist, broad shouldered look that men's fashions of the day dictated."

Since the U.S. Civil War took place from 1861 to 1865, it's well within the date range when men were wearing corsets. The amount of American men who wore corsets during the period isn't really documented, but certainly European men were wearing them, and most likely many upper class U.S. men were as well.

Today male corsetry still exists...

1. Denim originated in France in the city of Nimes in the later half of the 19th century. They produced the heavy cotton cloth for work clothes and were experts on the deep blue dye. De in French means: of, so fabric De Nimes, soon shortened to Demin. 2. Pants for women started in the 1930-1940s. Dress pants or slacks were popularized by Katherine Hepburn who shocked people by wearing wide legged pants, and Marlene Dietrich who wore men's tuxedos tailored to fit her. Jeans for women started in the 1950's, but solely for recreation like camping, hiking, etc. It wasn't until the late 60s to early 70s that jeans became acceptable to wear in public or school. Big designer labels came mostly in the early 80s with Calvin Klein. 3. Well I think women decided. I think getting the right to vote in the early 20th century, then being thrown into the workforce during WW2 and then Women's lib in the 60s made women feel that pants, didn't put them at a disadvantage with men.

No, they did not. That is, if you mean as a common thing. I am sure some did, but the prevailing men's fashion in the Civil War era was greatcoats with tunics and lots of buttons and fancy cross belts.

Well, even in antiquity, 5,000 years ago, men were wearing such due to the kind of work and pressures their waist used to undertake! Thus to protect them, they had to wear them!
There are painting in Knossos, Crete, Greece, showing the extremely thin waists of people who, in order to do specific work needed corsets!
