I did this very thing a few years ago. In my avatar, I'm sitting on it. A 1976 BMW R80/7.
I've been doing modifications to it since I bought it, and now it looks quite different ... cafe racer with bicycle bars ... but it gets noticed everywhere I ride it. I put maybe 12,000 miles a year on it, taking long trips from Savannah, GA to Washington, DC. Runs great.
I'm not advocating Beemers, per se (well, okay, I would), but if I had another $7gs, I'd go get another nearly restored classic (pick your brand) and work on it.
What a great dream ... maybe a Triumph? a Duke? an Aprilia? an old Yamaha (friend of mine has redone a 1976 Yamaha in-line four that screams!)?
I don't think you could get near a Harley worth the money ... the prestige of the brand is way out of line just now ... but maybe you could find the last "left in the barn by my late son" HD?
Anyway, have a blast.

a used 04 honda CBR 600RR or a 05 Suzuki GSXR 1000. both are in the $7000 price range. The CBR600RR can outhandle pretty much any other bike in stock form! The GSXR 1000 is just a monster on the open rode a almost no bike can keep up with that thing!

It all depends on what type you want. You can't touch a Harley in good condition for 7 grand. Yamaha has the Roadstar, V-Star. Honda has VTX's and Valkyries. Those are cruiser types though. You can get a pretty good one for 7000

is this your 1st bike?if not have you logged many hours on a 500cc plus street bike?enroll in the MSF (motorcycle safety foundation) rider safety course ASAP.it is 2-3 days long and THEY SUPPLY THE BIKES,at the end of the course you get your endorsement(very important for TEST RIDES AND INSURANCE) without having to get tested by state-pretty cool, huh?the next thing is new or used-new it is hard to beat the sv-650 suzi.used is another matter entirely.$7000.bucks is HUGE in the used market-just don,t forget helmet, gloves and jacket-always remember there are only 2 kinds of motorcycle riders -those that have crashed and those that ARE GONNA CRASH-good luck and keep it IN THE WIND!

Id save up another 20 thousand dollars and buy a Harley Davidson softail.

But really with 7 thousand I'd probably buy a kawasaki KLX 250. So I could ride it on the road and the trail.

Depends on what you want to do with it - for show or going fast, there's lots of Great Japanese bikes to be had for 7k, for serious travelling, I'd buy a used old (80's) BMW R100RS, then put some money into making it the way you want it. Classic bike, heavy, fast, fun to ride - And when well cared for, turns haeds. I'm on my second, and it just keeps on going. The odometer broke at 140K, and that was 5 years ago.

I would buy $100,000 bike on sale for $7000 then resell it.

I wouldn't buy one. They're impractical and generally kids who buy them are trying to be 'cool'. I don't want to be associated with that.
Buy a nice 4-door Honda or Nissan. It'll be a much better investment.
