Limewire, Ares, eMule, Kazaa, Azareus, and many other free P2P (Peer to Peer) software clients allow for free music downloads. However, this is very shady legal territory, and if you download illegal songs (basically, any song you find on a P2P network), you could be sued.
Realistically, odds are you won't get sued. Millions of people use Limewire and such, and the RIAA prefers to go after bootleggers of movies, or mass downloaders. Still, they occassionally make an example of some hapless soccer mom. Don't let that be you.
iTunes is cheap...99 cents a song. I like it too, it's very organized and you get the cover art.
Only download .mp3, .m4a, and .wma files with P2P software, NEVER .rar or .zip files, because there are plenty of spyware clients and viruses rampant in P2P networks.
