hi there...

if you are more of a shopaholic, take the hotels around Orchard Road.. I'd recommend Meritus Mandarin (5 or 6 stars), Marriott (5 or 6 stars), Phoenix Hotel (3 or 4 stars).. These are the hotels in the heart of town and travelling is a breeze.. Le Meridian is also not bad.

You could also try the YMCA or YWCA (i'm not sure).

Rendavous is kinda out of the way, with Orchard Road shopping district a hell of a distance (about 10-15min) to walk, especially in the heat and humidity of Singapore.. That said, the bus services are very efficient.. I'm not sure if the area around rendavous hotel is still under construction (they're upgrading the roads and building another underground MRT station nearby)..

Hotels in Singapore are generally rated lower than those in Australia.. That means you can enjoy 3stars (in singapore) accomodation at 4stars standard (in Australia).. I find that the rooms and service in the 3stars are comparable, if not better than the 4 stars advertised in Australia... Somehow, there is a discrapancy.

I don't agree with the comment that Taxi's charge double... The taxi industry is heavily regulated in that the drivers can only charge the amount on the meter.. It could have been double because the person in question travelled between midnight and 6am (that's the normal charge which is calculated by the taxi meter)...

The MRT (also known as the tube) is a really efficient way of travelling around... If you do not have alot of luggage, you could take the MRT to town.. The hassle is to transfer from City Hall Interchange to Orchard Station if you're not familar with the route. There are 2 main interchanges where you can do your transfers, and each cater to different directions (although you can get away with transfers from either station, they have designed it in such a way that you'll only need to cross the platform to change to the other direction you want to go. The trouble is finding which station to stop to go to a certain place, if you get what i mean.)

Let me know if you need more help.

Orchard Road is a shopper's paradise. However staying in the hotels around there can be quite expensive. For 4-star hotels, check out Gallery Evason and Merchant Court Hotel - both along the Singapore River. But this is your usual standard tourist hotel fare.

Want to experience something different? Try New Majestic Hotel (www.newmajestichotel.com) at Bukit Pasoh, the Scarlet (www.thescarlet.com) which is near historic Chinatown or 1929 (www.hotel1929.com) on Keong Saik Street. All 3 are beautiful conservation boutique hotels, and are very near the MRT. Also 1929 and the New Majestic are in one of Singapore's former notorious red-light districts. Don't worry - its super safe, clean and very up-market now. In fact I used to work at an ad agency along Bukit Pasoh, and it is a very safe neighbourhood at all hours of the day.

If you're off to Thailand - check out Chatuchak market. Wear comfortable clothes and bring loads of water...it's a HUGE weekend market. You can get some really good deals on flights there on Jetstar and Tiger Airways from Singapore with some tickets going as low as SGD$1!!

Generally in Singapore, even those unrated hotel, they are pretty good.

Some have mentioned the S$60 Hotel. Those are cater for short time prosititution. But they are never at all sub-standard. Their turn around time is very high, many walk in.

If you have a budget of about US$100/night, you will be enjoying yourselves very much.

Even with lesser budget, you will not be piss off with the service. Still good. Hoever, if your aim is to shop and move about, and the hotel serve as a clean place to rest, those 3 starts and below may be enough.

Personally I feel that 4 stars and above are for those with children, where they will have pool and play ground to entertain the kids.

Happy travelling. Cheers

I stayed in Singapore for a week.I booked a five star of the net....about 60 dollar per night. It was very cheap. And the service was excellent. But my impression is that the service, all over Singapore is excellent. They have great respect for the tourist. One tip though...take the tube(underground train) into the city from the airport(costs about 1dollar or less), but you will be fine to return by taxi, since they charge you double when you turn up totally ignorant.
The tube is very convenient from the airport, it's in the same building, and it's all signposted in English. The main language there being English, makes it a great place to visit!

If you could afford, try to look for hotels in Orchard Road. This is a main shopping belt in the Island cluster with many hotels ranging from 3 to 6 stars. Elizabeth Hotel is one of the hotels rated as 4 stars and is about USD103 per night.

if you are going to Singapore mainly for shopping purposes (and it's a really great place to shop and dine!), then you should try to reserve in the hotels in orchard road - rendezvous hotel is pretty nice and you could also see the hilton hotel in the same road. you might also want to try the holiday inn.

if you really like the realy great hotels, i suggest you stay at the raffles hotel or raffles the plaza but they are expensive. other nice hotels include elizabeth hotel, riverview hotel, marina mandarin, etc.

now, for shopping, the orchard road is pure heaven for shoppers. there are a lot of great shopping centers there. the more famous ones include lucky plaza where you'll get a lot of bargains for electronics. the wisma atria is a really great mall. ngee ann city is in orchard road too (if you want to look for books, you'll see the biggest book store in this mall). the hereen is famous for HMV, it's where you can shop for DVDs, music CDs, and some other stuff. i also suggest you visit Suntec City Mall, it's the biggest mall there and you can do a lot of stuff in that place - there are a lot of restaurants too.

enjoy your stay in Singapore! it's really a great place. :)
