No it is not normal for straight guys to call other straight guys late at night and talk about insignificant things.
What makes you so sure he's straight? I don't know of any of my straight friends that would call up another dude late at night just to chit chat. Maybe if they were drunk... the convo might be insignificant, but it would probably be short to.
Does this other person know you are gay/bi/or straight? If he knows you are gay or bi, then it sounds like he most certainly has something for you. Maybe one night when he calls make some gay comments... see what he says. Like ... What do you think about Bush and that gay amendment thing... or anything that may give you a clue as to what he is thinking...
If you like the guy too... maybe you could ask him to come over and hang out sometime... if he hits you up on that, then you probably have a closet gay on your hands :)

I have loads of straight mates who call me at all hours to talk about things. doesnt make them not normal. they might just want someone to talk to. They might see you as someone they can trust, may even see you as the only one they can trust. With todays lifestyles it is not uncommon for people to be putting on a "show", being someone other than themselves for the world to see. In cases like this a person may have only a select few people that they will talk to and be dare I say normal.

My friend straight Dan is one of the few people who call just to say hi and chew the fat. Everyone else only calls when they want some ting.

He probably doesn't know that you're gay or bisexual. If he does, then he probably wants to be friends. Either way, just talk to him anyway. There's nothing weird about this.
